Dial Up Internet

The original method of online access, dial up uses a phone line to connect to the internet. Because data is transmitted using a low frequency, analog signal, dial up is the slowest of internet connections, averaging 56 kbps of downstream data and 33 kbps upstream data. Another disadvantage of dial up is it ties up your phone line; you can't use the phone and access the internet at the same time. And unlike cable and DSL internet, which are "always on", you must manually connect to the internet every time. However, dial does have its advantages. It is the most affordable and widely available of internet access services.

An update of the old dial up service is "high speed dial up." By reducing initiation times, using acceleration servers and compressing/filtering certain file types, connection rates can be up to 5 times faster than conventional dial up.
